There was commotion at Chez Ntemba club in Gaborone, Botswana, during one of Tongai Moyo’s recent shows as fans clashed with tour promoters

This was due to musician’s late appearance on stage. Some people were reportedly injured while the promoters’ vehicle had its windows smashed in the ensuing chaos.

A number of people that had paid for the show left the venue prematurely as violent scenes erupted at the club.

The fans, who were mostly Zimbabweans, were expecting Moyo to be on stage before midnight but the promoters dragged the programme to give more time to Botswana musicians like Wendy, Biza and Sliza who were not popular with fans.

“People lost their patience around 2am and some fans went berserk throwing missiles on stage and destroying the promoters’ vehicles.

“Some revellers were injured as they fought with security personnel,” said a source.

Moyo’s manager Pliers Matesu Puraene confirmed the incident.

“I warned the promoter about the possibility of such a scenario but he did not take heed.

“The previous night we had played in Francistown and we went on stage at 4am.

“Our fans complained but there was no violence because there are fewer Zimbabweans in Francistown.

“I told him that such a programme could be risky because our fans were used to seeing us on stage before midnight,” Puraene said.

He said the Gaborone show was packed to capacity and most of the revellers were Zimbabweans.
“The promoter wanted us to play at 4am again but fans lost patience around 2am resulting in the commotion.

“It was a very bad scene and we had to urgently call Moyo and the band from their hotel to come and play.

“They went on stage at around 3 am and the show went well thereafter.”

Wendy, who was one of the performers at the show, confirmed the incident but refused to give details.

“Yes, there were disturbances at the show but I am not in a position to comment. I will give you my manager’s number and you talk to him because he was promoting the show,” Wendy said.

She provided the promoter’s phone number but it was unreachable.

Moyo’s last show of the tour at the Railway Club in Mahalapye was peaceful and the musician returned home last week.

Meanwhile on Friday Moyo is expected to launch his fourth DVD album that carries some of the popular hits off his previous albums.

The six-track video album, which is titled Dhewa’s Love Songs, is a selection of the best love songs from the musician’s six albums.

Moyo has so far released 12 albums but chose his best six tracks from as many albums to make the upcoming release.

The Kwekwe-based musician said he had come up with the album after realising that most of his popular songs focus on the theme of love.

“We have noticed that the majority of our hits are love songs and there has been demand for such videos,” Moyo said.

“We would have wanted to release a DVD to our latest album but it is always good to consider your fans’ desires.

“We will do the video album to Muridzi Wenyaya later but now is payback time to those that have made our hits over the past years.”

The album carries songs from some of the musician’s best albums.

He was optimistic that the album would be an important bridge between his audio albums Muridzi Wenyaya which was released last year and another one coming in April next year.

“This year we did not release any audio album but we hope this DVD will be as good as any new release.

“Our next album is coming in April next year but we are already playing most of the upcoming songs during our live shows,” he said.
