Cop head-butts woman over love proposal

A cop from Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb allegedly head-butted a woman who had turned down his love proposal and later tried to escape from police custody after his arrest, a court heard
The policeman, Elton Ndlovu (24) who resides at number 30536/8 Entumbane, who was stationed at the Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit in Changadzi, Birchenough Bridge, pleaded guilty last Monday to two counts of contravening Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23, assault and Section 185 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 unlawful escape from lawful custody.
Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Sithembinkosi Msipa presided over the case while Mrs Fiona Denhere prosecuted. It is the State’s case that on 6 February this year at 9pm, Ndlovu allegedly approached Ms Patience Dzumburwi, blocked her way and started proposing love to her.
Ms Dzumburwi is understood to have turned down his proposal and tried to escape resulting in a scuffle where Ndlovu grabbed her by the hand and head-butted her on the mouth.
It was further alleged Ndlovu assaulted her all over the body with clenched fists and open palms. Ms Dzumburwi reported the matter to ZRP Entumbane the following day leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
The court also heard that Ndlovu escaped from police custody after signing a detention book in acknowledgement of arrest. He is alleged to have turned violent when he was being escorted to the holding cells, slipped away from the officer and ran away.
Police officers followed in hot pursuit and members of the public also joined until they managed to re-arrest him after he had hidden at another house in the suburb.
Ndlovu was remanded out of custody to 23 February 2010.
